What I Learned From Oprah
What I Learned From Oprah
-- Andrew Eaton, CSCS
I don’t often get the chance to see Oprah – nor would I admit it if I did – but today, the show featured ordinary people who had lost extraordinary amounts of weight. Each guest offered key insights that had allowed them to make dramatic changes. The following are what I feel to be the most important points -
By merely being born, you have value. You have to value yourself to take control of your life. Every one of Oprah’s guests had, at some point, felt depressed, alone, isolated. Every one of them rebounded, recovered, and took control. You have to find the strength to ‘take back your life;’ ask yourself these questions, “What am I going to lose / miss out on if I continue down this path?” “How will my life be different when I reach my goals?”
Eat 6-8 small meals per day – small, balanced meals, consumed every three hours, help your body burn more calories than eating only two or three meals a day.
Baby steps – small, gradual, changes made daily result in huge change over time. Make a decision to do one small thing today that will positively impact you. Do the same tomorrow, and the next day. Making positive decisions each day is like stacking bricks; the first few seem heavy, and don’t seem to add up to much, but as the stack gets taller, you get stronger and can lift the next brick – make the next decision – a little easier!
Combine strength training and aerobic training - burns fat! If you haven’t been reading my newsletter, or if you’ve been reading it but haven’t implemented the strategies, what are you waiting for? Now is the perfect time to start!
Reward yourself - Set goals, and assign rewards to those milestones. The bigger the goal, the greater the reward. Lost 20 pounds? Earn a new outfit! Lost 35? A weekend away! Lost 50 pounds? Get yourself a new camera, snap lots of self-portraits, and email them to all your friends to make them jealous!
Just get up and get going - Pick one thing – whatever you can do – and do it consistently until it becomes habit. Then pick another positive change to attack!
Don’t forget about you – committing your life to family, work, etc., is commendable, but if you don’t make time for yourself, you’ll burn out. Taking care of yourself first is the best way to continue to take care of the other areas of your life!
Be active 5 days a week – ‘active’ can mean working out, but it can also mean yard work, playing with family & friends, or just going for a walk. Break a bit of a sweat daily, and you’re on the right track!
(Did I mention that nearly all of these weight-loss successes consulted with a trainer and followed the programs they were given? I didn’t? Hm.)
